New Rank of Chief Inspector of Machinery Increased Pay of Inspectors of Machinery - Pensions and Compassionate Allowances for Widows and Children of Chief Inspectors of Machinery and Engineers

Admiralty, 7th June, 1867.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, having had under their consideration the question of the pay and position of Inspectors of Machinery Afloat, and of Engineers in the Royal Navy, have been pleased, under the authority of Her Majesty's Order in Council of the 17th May, 1867, to establish the following Regulations :-

I. A new rank of Chief Inspector of Machinery to be created ; to rank with Paymasters-in-Chief and Secretaries to Admirals of the Fleet ; to be given to Officers of long and meritorious service ; and to be nine in number at present, but to be ultimately reduced to five, by not filling up any vacancies which may occur. This rank to be honorary, carrying no increase of Full Pay beyond that sanctioned for Inspectors of Machinery Afloat ; but their Half Pay to be the highest at present allowed to Inspectors of Machinery, irrespective of length of service, viz. 15s. 6d. per day.

II. The Full Pay of Inspectors of Machinery Afloat to be increased to �1 4s. 8d. a-day, or �450 3s. 4d. a-year, but the three Officers holding the appointments of Inspectors of Machinery Afloat for the Steam Reserves (whether they be Chief Inspectors or Inspectors of Machinery), to be allowed Full Pay at the rate of �1 7s. 5d. a-day, or �500 7s. 1d. a-year, in consideration of their responsible duties.

III. The Salary of the two Officers holding the appointment of Assistants to Chief Engineers in the Steam Factories at Portsmouth and Devonport (whether they be Chief Inspectors or Inspectors of Machinery) to be raised from �400 to �500 a-year.

IV. The Widows and Children of Chief Inspectors of Machinery Afloat to be granted the highest rate of Pensions and Compassionate Allowances payable to the Widows and Children of Inspectors of Machinery Afloat, irrespective of length of service, viz. :-

Widows	Children
�90	�14-�16	Ordinary Pension
�150	�16-�20	If the Officer was drowned or killed on duty, or died from injury or disease caused by extraordinary exposure or exertion on the service within 6 months after being first certified to be ill
�200	�18-�25	If the Officer was killed in action, or died within 6 months of wounds received in action.

V. The Widows and Children of Engineers to be granted Ordinary and Special Pensions mud Compassionate Allowances, according to the following scale:

Widows	Children
�40	�5-�10	Ordinary Pension
�50	�6-�12	If the Officer was drowned or killed on duty, or died from injury or disease caused by extraordinary exposure or exertion on service within 6 months after being first certified to be ill
�65	�8-�14	If the Officer was killed in action, or died within 6 months of wounds received in action.

The same regulations to he followed in awarding these Pensions and Compassionate Allowances as in the cases of the Widows and Children of other Officers.

VI. These Regulations to take effect from the 6th July, 1866.
