" Commander G. W Carter invalided. His loss is deeply regretted more especially by the junior officers." |

" Proceeded to sea in company with squadron. First Lieutenant Lawson made acting Commander and Lieutenant Bosanquet joined from the Liverpool." |
Wednesday 15th September
"A good strong gale blowing. Observed HMS Barrosa heave too, lower a boat and endeavour to save a man who was overboard. But she was unsuccessful. Found afterwards that it was one of our men, Dan Cox by name, who had fallen overboard unperceived and floating passed the Barrosa was observed by someone onboard her. " |
"We amuse ourselves at times by fishing for Albatross but have been unsuccessful as yet."
September 4th
"Hove too for the purpose of exchanging naval instructions. Our instructor did not go as he was on the sick list. We have had beautiful winds, as yet strong and fair. We passed about 150 miles to the southward of Tristan D�Achuna still running with a strong fair wind on the quarter."
September 27th
"Admiral made a signal to know if the chaplain was out of the sick list and to know if he would be able to go onboard the Phoebe to examine the midshipmen, The answer we made was, �Chaplain out of sick list but too feeble to go onboard Phoebe�. Then some smart sarcasm flew from the mast head in the shape of bunting wishing to know if the chaplain could be hoisted out in a cot etc."
September 30th
"A fine breeze sprung up going from 11 to 12 knots an hour."
October 1st
"Admiral made a signal to us to part company and proceed to Table Bay while the rest of the fleet went to Simon�s Bay. We go there to re-inforce the police while the fleet give leave. Captain Johnson made a signal that his health was bad asking the Admiral to send another ship in his place but the Admiral was firm in his resolve."
