BALL AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE:- Admiral Hornby and the captains and senior officers of the Flying Squadron were entertained by His Excellency and the Countess of Belmore, at a ball at Government House, on Thursday at which a very large number of other guests were present members of some of the principal residents of Sydney and its immediate vicinity. The reunion was one of a private character. Dancing commenced at about half-past 9 oclock, and was kept up with unabated spirit till the night was far advanced.

VISIT TO THE UNIVERSITY:- On Thursday afternoon Admiral Hornby, Captain Herbert, Captain Bythesea, and several naval officers attached to the Flying Squadron, paid a visit to the Sydney University, where they were received by the Chancellor (Mr Edward Deas Thomson, C.B.), Professor Badham, and some of the subordinate officers of that institution. Admiral Hornby and his friends expressed themselves much pleased with the entire building, and especially the great hall and library. The distinguished visitors appeared to be greatly struck with the magnificent view of the city from the eastern terrace, as they passed from the northern portion of the building to the southern range.
