Wreck of the Francis Spaight

Cape of Good Hope Shipping The Cape papers announce the total loss of the barque Francis Spaight, in Table Bay, on the 7th January last. She was on her passage from Manila to London, with a cargo of sugar, &c., and had touched at Table Bay to refresh. A violent gale of wind came on, during which she drifted ashore at a place where no assistance could be rendered, and shortly afterwards broke up. But little of the cargo was saved, and unfortunately only two of the crew escaped with their lives.
The following is the list of persons drowned per Francis Spaight.

William Rymes, cook ;
George Hutchins, seaman
John Smith, (of Leith),seaman

John Mitten. apprentices
Thomas Beddoe, apprentices
William Hall, apprentices
Richard Parker, apprentices
apprentices ; fifteen lost.

James Robertson, carpenter ;
John M'Leod, seaman.
Besides the above, six men, who had ventured to their assistance in a whaleboat, were also drowned, owing to so many flocking into the boat at once. Those rescued were indebted for their preservation to some gentlemen who swam their horses through the surf and brought them ashore. SG 6 Jun 1846
