Wrecked - The Lord Auckland

The following amusing paragraph respecting the accident to the Lord Auckland appears in the London papers of September.

We regret to announce that private letters have been received in town, which leave very little room to doubt that her Majesty's ship Auckland has been unfortunately wrecked. This vessel was engaged in endeavouring to carry out Lord Stanley's project of finding a fit site for a new penal settlement, we believe to the north of Port Essington. The first attempt, as our readers are aware, was a complete failure, but as it was in hopeless efforts of this description that the energy of Lord Grey's predecessors was chiefly remarkable, a renewal of the attempt was determined on. A site was discovered possessing the advantages of being completely without water, and being so infested with mosquitoes as to be actually uninhabitable. It was on her return to announce this hopeful discovery that the Auckland went upon the rocks.
