| Loss of the American Whaler Iris
|
A Fremantle correspondent informs us that there has been some doubt as to the maintenance of the seamen belonging to the American whaler Iris, lost at Port Gregory, who have been brought down to Fremantle in the Perseverance; some persons thinking that the local Government should be called upon for expenses, while others are of opinion that the consular agent for the United States at the port should be answerable on the part of his Government. Same of the crew are Americans and others are Portuguese, yet all are borne upon the ships books, and they would consequently appear to be under the denomination of American seamen. We understand that there is a considerable quantity of oil in the Iris, the sale of which, together with what the wreck would realise, would surely be ample for any expenditure on account of these men.- Perth Gazette, August 24th.
