| His Swedish Majesty's frigate Eugenie - Plymouth |
Plymouth, June 8, [1853].- His Swedish Majesty's, frigate Eugenie, 40, Captain Virgin, arrived this morning. She left Europe in October, 1851, and touching at Rio Janeiro and La Plata. passed through the Straits of Magellan in February, 1852.
She called at Valparaiso, and left Callao in March, and. sailing circuitously through the Pacific, visited the Gallapagos, Panama, the Sandwich Islands, San Francisco, Otaheite, the Friendly Islands and Sydney. Her course was then directed into the Indian Ocean and from Australia she went to the Caralinas and the Ladrones, Canton, Manila, Singapore, Batavia, and the Mauritius. She left the Cape of Hood Hope on the 20th April, one day before the last mail packet, the Bosphorus, Captain Benson, and sailed from St. Helena on the 4th May. four days after her.
The Eugenie has thus accomplished a voyage round the world. Her crew consisted of: 340 hands, of whom two have died of fever, and one by a fall from the rigging, and two have deserted, during her absence. Their condition and the state of the ship reflect great credit upon the Swedish Navy. A number of the men have been suffering from partial blindness by night, but this affliction has diminished as they approached a more northerly latitude. The blindness is attributed to the effects of the sun in the burning climates through which the ship has passed.. After anchoring in the Sound, the Eugenie fired a royal salute, which was acknowledged by the batteries on the citadel. She then complimented the flag of Port Admiral Sir John Ommanney, and was answered by the Impregnable, 104, Captain A. Lowe in Hamoaze.- Times.
