Phantom Ship

Extract from a private letter dated barque Tenasserim, Torres Straits, 16th September. 1846:-

"Last evening, after coming to anchor, the masters of the Sarah Scott and

Le Panthere

came on board our ship ; the latter has caused us no little anxiety by reporting that he saw yesterday a brig and a ship, both decked, under water, with sails set. Neither our Captain nor that of the Sarah Scott having seen anything - of the kind, the statement is most perplexing. The Frenchman is very positive ; he distinctly saw what he states, and concluding that the distressing spectacle was not unobserved by us, bethought it unnecessary to make any signal. He moreover asserts that he saw persons upon the rigging.

Our Captain would have sent a boat had he thought the latter possible, but we were thirty miles beyond the spot described, and it would have been hazardous to put the ship back in the position in which we were, as the wind was directly adverse to return."
