Fog Signals in Steam Vessels The Directors of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company have issued the following caution to the commanders of that company's vessels :

" Special Circular.-

The recent deplorable loss of life and property occasioned by the foundering of the steamship Arctic, as well as the other fatal accidents from collisions at sea during fogs, have induced the directors of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company to issue this special circular, in addition to the cautions enjoined in the 14th article of their existing printed ' instructions for the safe and efficient navigation of their ships '

When the weather sets in thick so that objects cannot be distinguished - say a-quarter of a mile distant - the vessels are to be slowed to half speed ; or, if the fog becomes more dense, the speed is to be still more reduced, or the ship stopped altogether, according to the discretion of the commander.

The steam-whistles are constantly sounded during fogs or thick weather. The diminution of speed and the fact of the steam-whistle having been sounded are to be recorded in the logbook. Any deviations from the important cautions contained in this circular will be visited with the dismissal from the company's service of all parties inculpated is such disobedience and neglect. By order of the board, C. W. Howell, Secretary."
