Copy of a Letter from Captain Owen Stanley to the Colonial Secretary. Her Majesty's Survey ship Rattlesnake, Sir, As a proof of the great good effected by the considerate liberality of the Colonial Government in placing, from time to time, certain quantities of provisions and fresh water on Booby Island, for the relief of unfortunate shipwrecked persons, I have the honour to annex, for your information, an extract copied from a record found at that place when visited by her Majesty's schooner Bramble, in October last. Thomson, [Copy extract referred to in foregoing letter] Booby Island First - I thank God that he thus far delivered me and my companions, and last - gratitude to those men that left provisions and water here, without which we must have suffered much, if not perished. We were wrecked on Osprey Reef, June 29th ; it was in 147 � 10 ' east by my long.- lat. from 14 � 08 ' to 13 � 48 ' south. Booby Island, Arrived last night at 6 p.m. July 16th, and sailed this morning at 10 a.m. ; entered the Barrier Reef, at Raine's Islet, Saturday, 14th, at 4 p.m., from Sydney, bound to Manila and Amoy. Took the crew of the American whaler Ceres, Captain Adams and 28 of her crew, on board, they having been 11 days on the island. They were wrecked on the Osprey Reef, on June 29th, and were seven days in their boats, and arrived at this place July 6th, all well. The Ceres had on board when wrecked 2800 barrels of oil.
