On Saturday evening, the members of the Australian Club gave a dinner to Captain Blackwood and the officers of H.M.S Fly, as a testimony of the gallant officers' services in the arduous duty of surveying Torres Straits. The chair was filled by Mr. Speaker M'Leay, and the vice-presidents were Messrs. Riddell and Griffiths. Among the invited quests were his Excellency the Governor, the French Consul, and Commodore Berard, and several officers of Le Rhin corvette. The usual toasts were drunk upon the occasion. The dining room of the Club was very tastefully fitted up with flags and flowers, and the band of the 99th regiment occupied the orchestra. About eighty gentlemen were present. Surveying Squadron - Farewell Dinner. - On Monday, the 15th instant, the junior officers of H.M. Schooners Bramble and Castlereagh were entertained at a farewell dinner given by their brother officers of the Fly, at the Adelphi Hotel, York-street. We are happy to see this evidence of good feeling and mutual respect existing between gentlemen, so long engaged together in a service as arduous in its nature as important to these colonies. The entertainment was got up in a style to reflect great credit on the proprietor, Mr. Murphy, and after an evening much enjoyed by all, the party broke up with mutual regrets at their, approaching separation.Sydney Morning Herald ^ back to top ^ |
