Third type, 30 originally built: M.L. 551 - 580. Built 1918. No details known, but similar to first and second types below.

Second type, 500 originally built: M.L. 51 - 550. Built 1915.

  • 37 tons.
  • Dimensions : 80 - 88 x 12' 2" x 3' 10".
  • Guns : 1 - 3 inch AA. or lesser calibre of AA. and other types.
  • B.H.P. 440 - 450 = 19 kts. Machinery: 2 sets of Standard petrol motors. Petrol: about 1850 gallons.
  • Complement, 9.

First type: 50 originally built: M.L. 1-50. Built 1915.

  • 34 tons.
  • Dimensions : 75 x 12 x 3.75 feet.
  • Guns: 1 - 3 pdr. or 2 pdr. AA. and/or 1 or 2 M.G. or Lewis guns.
  • B.H.P. 440 - 450 = 19 kts. Petrol: about 1650 gallons.
  • Complement, 8.

General Notes.-Present boats in service can be ascertained by reference to current Navy List. Others now scrapped, being worn out. Mostly built in U.S. and Canadian Yards and shipped across the Atlantic. During War, fitted with D.C., smoke boxes, hydrophones, &c., but special gear now removed from nearly all. Petrol consumption heavy.

War Losses: Twenty-four boats, detailed in War Loss Section. M.L. 220, one of the eleven British M.L. on the Rhine, was almost destroyed by a petrol explosion and fire during 1919. May not be repaired.
