It is recommended that the use of two shots for each round in guns should be restrained as much as possible, it having appeared from various experiments which have been made with different natures of sea service ordnance, that after firing twenty rounds rounds repeatedly at only the interval of five minutes between each round, the gun has become so violently heated, as to render extremely hazardous to continue the firing at that rate,
It is also suggested that the rule which the Captain. of Men of War have hitherto practised in reducing the charges of powder for carronades as well as for cannon when the pieces become warm in a longer engagement may be rigidly attended to.
The proportion of gunpowder delivered to His Majesty's Navy consisting of the following quantities, and descriptions, viz.
For Foreign Service 5-7ths of Red L.G.
2-7ths of White L.G.
For Channel Service 4-7ths of Red L.G.
3-7ths of White L.G.
It is understood that the Red L.G. gunpowder is to be used for distant engagements, and the White L.G. gunpowder for close engagement ; and that only the White L.G. gunpowder be used for scaling and salutes
