Appendix No. 36

Dr. James Carmichael Smyth's Method of fumigating with Nitrous Acid.

Such a number of pipkins as may be necessary, are to be two-thirds filled with sand previously heated. In this heated sand is to be immersed a gallypot, into which is to be poured one measure of Concentrated Vitriolic Acid, (when it has acquired some degree of heat ;) a measure of the pure Nitre in powder, is then to be gradually added, and the mixture stirred with the glass spatula, until the vapour arises in considerable quantity. The pipkins are then to be carried to every part of the Ship, where foul air is suspected to lodge.
