Article I
WHEN one of His Majesty's Ships is commissioned, the Boatswain is to exert himself to get on board all the Stores committed to his charge as expeditiously as possible ; he is to examine them very carefully, and to inspect very minutely all rigging fitted in the Dock Yard, and to report to the Captain whatever defects he may discover in any of them. Boatswain to get the Stores on board and examine them, and report any defects he may discover.
Article II
When fitting out the Ship, and at all other times when it may be necessary to cut out rigging, he is to be extremely careful to cut every rope of the precise length allowed by the establishment, unless some particular circumstance attending the Ship shall make it necessary to alter it, in which case he is to inform the Captain and to receive his orders for such alteration. Article III
He is, once at least everyday, to examine the state of the rigging, to discover as soon as possible any part which may be chafed, or likely to give way, that it may be repaired without loss of time. He is at all times to be careful that the anchors, booms, and boats be properly secured. To examine the state of the rigging once every day.
Article IV
He is to be very attentive to have ready at all times a sufficient number of mats, plats, knippers, points, and gaskets, that no delay or inconvenience may be experienced when they are wanted. To have ready a sufficient number of mats, plats, knippers &c.
Article V
He is to be very attentive in observing, in the working up of junk, that every part of it is converted to all such purposes as it can possibly be made applicable. To convert junk to every possible purpose.
Article VI
He is to be very frequently upon deck in the day, and at all times both by day and night, when any duty shall require all hands being employed. He is, with his Mates, to see that the Men go quickly upon deck when called, and that, when there, they perform their duty with alacrity and without noise or confusion. Article VII
When the Ship is preparing for battle, he is to be very particular in seeing that every thing necessary for repairing the rigging is in its proper place ; that the men stationed to that service may know where to find immediately whatever may be wanted. Article VIII
When the Ship is ordered to be paid off, he is to be very attentive to prevent any of the rigging being damaged or cut, he is to see every part of it properly tallied and stopped together, before he returns it into store. To prevent the rigging being damaged when the Ship is ordered to be paid off.
Article IX
He is to be very attentive to the conduct of the sailmaker, to see that he attends to his duty, and that he keeps the sails in good repair ; and he is himself to visit the sail-room frequently to see that the sails are in good order and properly stowed. Article X
When he returns any sails into store he is to see that they are perfectly dry, carefully made up and properly tallied ; and he is to see that they are so carefully stowed in the Boat or Vessel which carries them on shore, as to prevent their receiving any damage. Article XI
He is to be attentive to the conduct of the rope-maker, to see that he is diligent, that the rope he makes is well made, and that the quantity corresponds with the quantity of yarns he issues for this purpose, and he is to charge himself with the rope that is made of them.
