Able to read and write well, and must pass a fair examination in the following subjects - How wood, iron, and steel masts and yards are constructed, and how to fish them in a ready and efficient manner ; ability to calculate the proper proportions for making masts and yards from rough spars ; ability to describe the manner in which one or two thicknesses of sheathing in wood-sheathed Ships are secured, also the manner in which a wood deck is secured to iron beams, stringer-plates, or iron-deck ; knowledge of how the keel, stem, stern-post, and rudders of iron ships are formed, and how the stem, stern-posts, and shaft brackets are secured ; how the stern tube is formed ; how the bulk-heads are secured to the Ship's side, and how they are stiffened ; how water-tight doors and sluice valves are formed and worked; how iron beams are secured to the Ship's side; ability to describe the transverse and longitudinal framing of a Ship, and the formation of the double bottom, ability to show how iron plates are united to one another, and to the iron frames, to describe the method of securing the armour to the Ship; and to describe the pumping, flooding, and draining arrangements in Ships with or without double bottoms ; also knowledge of the ventilating arrangement generally fitted in His Majesty's Ships.
  4. Officers of the Dockyard at Chatham, Portsmouth, Devonport, Malta, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Bermuda, Cape of Good Hope, and Bombay; also, at Sydney, the Chief Carpenter or Carpenter borne for service on shore in both cases under the supervision of a Captain or Commander on the Station.

  2. Above 23, or in the case of those entered as Boy Shipwrights, over 20; V.G. character and one year's service as Leading Shipwright (O.S.), or two years' service as Shipwright in the case of men who have not been Leading Shipwrights (O.S.).
  3. Must possess a knowledge, of wood and iron shipbuilding, be capable of using the ordinary tools for each efficiently, be able to describe clearly some of the principal parts of iron and wood ships, and the method of fitting and attaching to an iron vessel such things as water-tight doors. He must also have some general knowledge of the structure of a wooden ship ; know how to take account of a job, and trim a piece of rough wood for any particular work, such as a plank in the bottom, or a shelf-piece, or to shift a strake in a boat. Must understand the first four rules of Arithmetic.

NOTE a.-The rate of pay of Shipwrights who were serving as Boy Shipwright, Shipwright, Leading Carpenter's Crew or Carpenter's Crew on 30th September 1907 is to be increased on the completion of six years' service in the rating of Shipwright to 4s. 3d. a day for Continuous Service men, and to 4s. a day for Non-Continuous Service men, provided they are of very good character and are recommended by their Commanding Officers ; also that in the case of Non-Continuous Service men, no break has taken place in their service since 30th September 1907. This rate of pay is not to be granted for any period prior to 1st October 1907, nor to ratings entering the Carpenter and Shipwright classes on or after that date.

  2. Over 21, or, if advanced from Boy Shipwright over 18 ; Leading Carpenter's Crew and Carpenter's Crew, with not less than 6 years' service from date of entry, are eligible to be examined for and advanced to Shipwright if vacancies exist.
  3. Able to read and write fairly. Must possess a knowledge of wood and iron shipbuilding and be capable of using the ordinary tools for each efficiently; must know the different parts of a boat and how to repair them.
  4. Officers of the Dockyard at Chatham, Portsmouth, and Devonport Malta, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Bermuda. Cape of Good Hope, and Bombay; also, at Sydney, the Chief Carpenter or Carpenter borne for service on shore, in both cases under the supervision of a Captain or Commander on the Station. Candidates who offer themselves at Queenstown are to be provisionally examined by the Officers of the Flag Ship, and if considered well qualified they are to he sent to Devonport for final examination and entry.

  4. Between 14 and 16 on 1st May in the year in which they arc examined. Must pass successfully usual medical and Civil Service Educational Examination for Dockyard Apprentice. Will also be further examined by a Naval Medical Officer as to physical fitness for service in the Royal Navy. Must produce the consent in writing of his parent, guardian or nearest relative, to his entering the Royal Navy and engaging to serve for 12 years' continuous service from the age of 18.
  5. Cannot be disrated for punishment.
  6. On entering, Boy Shipwrights will be placed on Ship's books and borne for training in H.M. Dockyards. They will not be victualled or required to wear uniform, but will live at home, and will be subject to the regulations respecting Dockyard Apprentices, so far as applicable. Attendance at the Dockyard Schools will be compulsory for the first three years, and Boys who have not reached a satisfactory standard at the end of that period must continue to attend until they do so. They will be liable to discharge for misconduct, or failure to make satisfactory progress. Boy Shipwrights will be rated Shipwright and discharged to sea service as soon alter completing five years' service as Apprentice as they may be found on examination to be fit for the rating. At the expiration of 12 years' service from age of 18, facilities will be given to those who wish it to serve as Shipwright in H.M. Dockyards.
