  2. Over 18. Direct entry from shore of Officers' Stewards and Cooks to fill vacancies not to be allowed without special Admiralty authority when there are available men in the Depots, see 358 and 359.
  3. Must read and write fairly and have a fair knowledge of the simple rules of arithmetic.
  4. The relative rank of Officers' Chief Stewards and Cooks is substantive for all purposes (including those of discipline) except in the matter of Extra Pay, Good Conduct Gratuity (which is awarded under the conditions applying in the case of A.B.'s serving under the Continuous Service system) and of counting Petty Officer's time for pension. If these ratings are borne on the book of a Depôt under Art. 358, they are to be paid as Officers' Stewards and Cooks, First Class. (Note.- A man re-entered within five years of his discharge in a rating in which he has previously served will be entitled to count his former service in that rating towards increase of pay. If re-entered in a rating inferior to that in which he has previously served, he will be entitled to count for increase of pay any tine served in a superior rating.)

  3. Cannot be disrated for punishment.
  4. As for Officers' Stewards and Cooks 1st Class (No. 47). Men holding these ratings who call show five years' service as Officers' Steward or Officers' Cook, 1st or 2nd Class, or the two combined, and who are otherwise eligible, may be recommended for the Good Conduct Medal provided they are not holding the lower rating on account of misconduct. This will admit of the award of the Medal on re-employment in one of the higher ratings.
