  4. Ordinary, but to A.B. or other equivalent rating if capable of performing the duty.
  5. Any suitable men volunteering for the Rating of Ship's Corporal, 1st or 2nd Class, may be examined for it on attaining the requisite age ; and copies of the certificates of successful candidates are to be sent to the Commodore of the man's General Depot immediately they have passed. These men may be given an acting appointment in a vacancy by the Commander-in-Chief of a Foreign Station. In the case of a Marine whose subsequent transfer as a Probationer is approved this acting time is to count in the period of probation required, and he will cease to receive pay, clothing, or allowance in lieu from the date of his acting appointment, in the same way as if he were a probationer. Volunteers from the Royal Marines for the Ship's Police may be appointed on probation for a period not exceeding 2 years, and will receive during this period the pay and allowances of the rating. During probation their discharge from the Royal Marines will be held in abeyance, and they will be noted on the records of the Division as," employed and paid in Naval Ratings." They will, however, cease to receive pay or clothing, or allowances in lieu, as Marines. Pending final transfer to Ship's Corporal, Corporals of Marines are liable to be reduced to the ranks under Art. 1180 for misconduct, but not for incompetence. At the end of the 2 years, or earlier if specially recommended by the Captain of the Ship, men who have given satisfaction and who are desirous of continuing as Ship's Police, will be discharged entirely from the Royal Marines ; they must then execute continuous service engagements for 12 years, or to complete 22 years for pension, which should be ante-dated to date of entry on probation from the Marines, and they will be allowed to reckon the time on probation towards increase of pay and Naval Pension. No Ship's Corporal is to be allowed to re-enter or re-engage without the concurrence of the Commodore of the General Dept. See (F*) opposite Master-at-Arms, No. 1. Note.- Probationers not transferred to the Ship's Police will revert to the Marines. Cloth tunics and frocks, less than 16 months in wear, of Marines borne on Probation as Ship's Police will be returned into Store at Divisional Headquarters prior to transfer on probation, and will be available for re-issue in event of reversion to the Marines. In the case of Men who revert to the Marines within the allowed period of 2 years, the time served as Ship's Police on probation will reckon towards their Marine engagements, and for all other purposes; as though it had been served in the Marines. Whenever Marines pass for the rating, the fact should be recorded on their Service Certificates, and noted in the next quarterly return to Headquarters.
