They will, however, cease to receive pay as Marines, but will be allowed the use of Marked Bedding while on probation. At the end of the course of Training, men who have given satisfaction, and who are desirous of continuing on the Sick-berth Staff, will be discharged entirely from the Royal Marines ; they must then execute Continuous Service engagements for 12 years from the date of their entry oil probation, or to complete 22 years for pension, and on so doing will be granted a free kit and they will be entitled to a free set of bedding, on their discharge to service afloat. Sergeants of the Royal Marines desirous of joining the Sick-berth Staff will be required to revert to the rank of Corporal before entering upon the period of probation. Marines borne on probation will retain the whole of their clothing and necessaries, also greatcoat and waistbelt, but their arms and other accoutrements are to be returned into store prior to their transfer on probation. The greatcoat and waistbelt, also cloth tunics and frocks which have not been the prescribed period in wear (16 months) are to be returned into Store at Divisional Headquarters on their final transfer to the Sick-berth Staff. In the case of men who revert to the Marines, the time served on probation will reckon towards completion of their Marine engagements, and for all other purposes. All appointments of Marines on probation, as well as the transfer of such men at the end of the probationary period are to be made by the Commanders-in-Chief at the Home Ports only, who will refer each case to the Deputy Adjutant General, R.M., for concurrence.
