An Analysis of Bishop's Transcripts

Baptisms

Using the data in the LDS BVRI CD from the Bishop's Transcripts as the basis.

Using other BTs from the same source I hope to carry out similar analysis in the future to see if the conclusions drawn here can be applied elsewhere.

***   =   No Baptisms recorded in Bishop's Transcripts for this year

*      =   Number of baptisms appears to indicate an anomaly when compared with years either side.

 General observations:

  • Late 17th and 18th century baptisms were often performed at home and sometimes went unregistered
  • Record keeping for Christenings were less reliably than for marriages and burials
  • From 1783 to 1794 a tax of 3d (three pence) was levied on each baptism entered in the Parish Register
