Towns and Villages which have moved in and out of Dorset

Bournemouth  formerly a part of Hampshire moved to Dorset 1 April 1974 and from 1 April 1997 became a unitary authority joining Dorset for ceremonial purposes only

Chardstock     formerly a part of Dorset moved to Devon 1896, but remains in the Diocese of Salisbury.

Dalwood   formerly a detached part of Dorset and a chapelry of Stockwood moved to Devon 1836, transferred to the Archdeaconry and Diocese of Exeter in 1836  in exchange for Thorncombe

Goathill was transferred from Somerset to Dorset in 1896 and the Parish Registers etc were also transferred to the Dorset Record Office.

Hawkchurch  A parish in the Archdeaconry of Dorset and Diocese of Bristol, 3 miles N.E. of Axminster.   Hawkchurch was in Dorset until transferred to the county of Devon in 1896.

Holwell formerly belonged to Somerset transferred to Dorset 1844, as were the Parish Registers.

Poole    (formerly Dorset) became a unitary authority from 1 April 1997 joining Dorset for ceremonial purposes only

Poyntington was transferred from Somerset to Dorset in 1896 as were the Parish Registers

Sandford Orcas was transferred from Somerset to Dorset in 1896 with the Parish Registers and other records.

Seaborough was transferred from Somerset to Dorset in 1896

Stockland   formerly a part of Dorset moved to Devon 1842 in exchange for Thorncombe (see also Dalwood)

Thorncombe   formerly a part of Devon moved to Dorset in 1842 or 1844 (depending upon secondry source) by Act of Parliament in exchange for Stockland and Dalwood:  however had already been transferred to diocese of Salisbury in 1836

Trent  was transferred to from Somerset to Dorset in 1896 with the PRs: some images can be found at: of Trent - St Andrew's Church and other pictures of the village.

Wambrook   (formerly a chapelry of Chardstock, Devon (see above)) was transferred from Dorset to Somerset in 1896
