Hardy's Monument, Portesham, Dorset

Hardy's Testimonial. It is the intention of the friends of the late Sir Thomas M. Hardy to raise a monument to his respected memory, on the Blagdon Hills, in Dorsetshire, a spot overlooking his native village, and still more remarkable as being a site which he himself had pointed out to Government, some years since, as a place on which some distinguishing column should be erected for the service of the Channel navigation, the land near it being of a monotonous character, a well known mark being much wanting. About a thousand pounds are required for the purpose; and as the matter has been warmly taken up by the nobility and gentry of the county, we now call the attention of the Naval. service to the fact ; and as Sir Thomas was well known to almost all in the profession, & rendered to very many, great obligations, we are in hopes sufficient will be raised to make this national column not only useful, but highly ornamental. About 500 tons of stone from the Portesham quarries are now being excavated and squared for the purpose. Hampshire Telegraph, 22 April, 1844
