Notes and Queries |
| Preface |
This selection of extracts with a Dorset and genealogy flavour has been transcribed from that superb source: the Internet Library of Early Journals, to be found at: http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ilej/ which provides a selection of 20 year runs of such 18th and 19th century magazines such as:
The Annual Register,
The Gentleman's Magazine and
Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine
Notes and Queries
which can be a valuable source for the historian and genealogist. It amuses me that the questions asked 140 plus years ago are still asked today - eg regarding burial in wool ;-)
Please note that Notes and Queries was a national publication and has no connection, as far as I know, with the Somerset and Dorset Notes and Queries which appeared on the scene at a later date.
* Whilst this is a wonderful resource it can be difficult for the uninitiated to find what they want and to end up thinking they are wasting their time - whilst I am unable to assist with actual searches I hope these transcripts will give browsers some idea of the little gems that can be unearthed given a little time and some perserverance - enjoy.
