Transcriber's Notes

NB In each of the volumes, words will be discovered which have been struck through and substituted - these replacements reflect the changes made by James in his errata, at the end of Volume 6

The version at present uploaded represents a first attempt and is in the process of revision, as, not a few spelling and punctuation mistakes are to be found, although, in general, most of it, hopefully, makes sense as it stands. With over 2,400 pages, in 6 volumes, to be checked, this is likely to take not a little time, but IMHO better to have the substance of the information available now than in a few months time. With so much to check I suspect that, with my eyesight as it is, I shall still miss the occasional error...., I believe I've checked most of the names and figures that are to be found, so these should be OK, but what with late night transcribing etc. one can never be too sure.

I've included as much as possible from each publication, even down to the instructions to the binder as to where the Abstracts should be placed, which I would guess, would have given Mr. James as much cause for irritation, as did the printer's errors, had he been alive when this publication saw the light of day, thanks to Captain Chamier.

In case of doubt the source for this publication is the 1837 edition, which I've acquired from various sources ie volumes I and II are from one source and volumes III - VI are from another - they may look tatty and worn on my book shelf, but the leather bindings still smell good :-)

Later. Having difficulty in getting round to simply proof reading this material again I've decided that it might be more profitable, if much slower, to attempt to make brief notes of events involving the RN ships mentioned and include those notes in my database of 19th Century of RN ships to be found here, thus producing, I hope, a slightly better index than already exists ? whilst doing this I also hope to create links between these notes and the William James transcript thus making it easier to read the full story and to see what else was going on at the same time ?
