Assistant Paymasters - Pay & Benefits

Present: The Queen's most Excellent Majesty in Council.

Whereas there was this day read at the Board a Memorial from the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, dated the 12th of October 1877, in the words and figures following, viz.:

    Whereas we have had under our consideration the position and prospects of the Assistant Paymasters of Your Majesty's Fleet; and whereas we are of opinion that the case of these Officers will be most deservedly met by according them an increase of full-pay, and by granting to the widows and children of Assistant Paymasters of not less than 10 years' service Pensions and Compassionate Allowances

    We would therefore most humbly submit that Your Majesty will be graciously pleased to sanction the following proposals, viz.:-

    1. To increase the full-pay of Assistant Paymasters after 10 years' service in that rank by 6d. per diem for each further year's service until a maximum of 11s. 6d. per diem be reached.

    2. To establish one uniform rate of full-pay for Assistant Paymasters in Charge, viz., 12s. 6d, per diem, in lieu of 11s. 6d. under 9 Sears' service, and 12s. 6d. above 9 years' service as now allowed.

    3. Assistant Paymasters with over 8 years" seniority as such, to rank with Lieutenants of under 8 years' seniority.

    4. Pensions to widows and Compassionate Allowances to children of Assistant Paymasters of not less than 10 years' service on full-pay in that rank to be granted according to the following scale, viz. :

Widows-  
Ordinary Pension �40
Special Pension in lieu of Ordinary Pension
If the Officer be killed in action. or die within 6 months of wounds received in action
�65
If the Officer be drowned or suffer other violent death in all immediate act of duty, or if it he proved to the satisfaction of the Admiralty that he dies from the effects of any injury or disease caused by extraordinary exposure or exertion on service within 6 months after his being first certified to be ill. �50
Compassionate Allowances to Legitimate Children:  
Ordinary Compassionate Allowance �5 to �10
If the Officer be killed in action or die within 8 months of wounds received in action, as in the case of Widow's Pension of �65 . �8 to �14
If the Officer be drowned or suffer other violent death, &c. &c., as in the case of Widow's Pension of �50 �6 to �12

In conclusion, we most humbly request that we may be empowered to carry the same into effect from the 1st October, the Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury having concurred in the expense which will be consequent thereon.

Her Majesty, having taken the said Memorial into consideration was pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to approve of what is therein proposed ; and the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are to give the necessary directions herein accordingly.
