Numbers of Engineer Officers and Chief Engine Room Artificers, and Pay of Stokers.

Whereas we have had under our consideration the necessity for meeting the increased requirements of the Engine Room Department of Your Majesty's Fleet in as economical a manner as is compatible with efficiency :

We, therefore, beg leave most humbly to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to sanction the following proposals to take effect from

1st April, 1893, namely : -

The establishment to consist of-

Fleet, Staff, and Chief Engineers 280 250
Engineers and Assistant Engineers 457 487

Engine Room Ratings

Chief Engine Room Artificers - The limit of the number of Chief Engine Room Artificers to be one-fourth of the total of Chief and other Engine Room Artificers, instead of one-fifth as laid down in Your Majesty's Order in Council of the 17th May 1890.

Chief Stoker. - Continuous Service rate of pay to be altered as follows : -

Proposed Pay. Present Pay.
3s. a day 2s. 11d. a day
rising by triennial increments of 6d a day, to a maximum of 5s. a day. After three years' service, 3s. 5d. a day.

Leading Stoker.- The rating to be divided into two classes, with the following Continuous Service rates of pay : -

Leading Stoker 1st Class 2s. 6d. a day.
(First Class Petty Officer.)
Present pay of Leading Stoker 2s. 5d. a day.
Leading Stoker 2nd Class 2s. 3d. a day.
(Second Class Petty Officer.)

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have concurred in the foregoing proposals.
