Admiralty Order in Council No. 109.
22 February, 1896,
N.
Whereas by Your Majesty's Order m Council, dated the seventh day of July, 1874, Your Majesty was graciously pleased to ordain that a Silver Medal should be established, bearing on one side Your Majesty's effigy and on the other side the words "For Conspicuous Gallantry," the said Medal to be awarded to such Petty Officers and Seamen of Your Majesty's Navy, and Non-commissioned Officers and Privates of Your Majesty's Corps of Royal Marines, as may at any time distinguish themselves by acts of pre-eminent bravery in action with the enemy.
And whereas it is further ordained that "in the case of Chief and First Class Petty Officers of Your Majesty's Navy and Sergeants of Your Majesty's Corps of Royal Marines, an annuity (not exceeding 20 to each) may be awarded with such medal at our discretion, and provided that the amount authorised from time to time for such awards by the Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury is not exceeded.
We beg leave to recommend that the powers conferred by Your Majesty's said Order in Council shall be so far extended as to authorise the award of an annuity, at our discretion, to all recipients of this Medal, whatever their rank or rating may have been when the medal was awarded, on their promotion to Chief or First Class Petty Officers in Your Majesty's Navy or Sergeants of Your Majesty's Corps of Royal Marines.
The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in this proposal.
