Further Remuneration to Captains of Guns and Turrets

Admiralty Order in Council No. 158.

18 May, 1897.

N.

Whereas great difficulty has been experienced in getting a sufficient number of suitable Seamen of Your Majesty's Navy to qualify for the higher Gunnery ratings, such as Captain of Gun, Captain of Turret Gun, and Captain of Turret :

And whereas we are of opinion that it is very desirable, especially in view of the expansion of Your Majesty's Fleet, that this state of things should be remedied :

And whereas we, having fully considered the circumstances, are of opinion that it is necessary to grant additional rewards and extra pay to further remunerate men selected for these higher Gunnery ratings :

We therefore beg leave to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to sanction the following proposals, to take effect from the first day of April, 1897, viz. :-

  1. Men shall, on becoming Captains of Guns, be advanced to the rating of Leading Seaman, provided they are in all respects qualified.
  2. The extra allowance granted to Captains of Turret Guns shall be increased from 2d. per diem to 4d, per diem.
  3. The extra allowance granted to Captains of Turrets shall be increased from 3d. per diem to 6d,. per diem.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in these proposals.
