Grant of Gratuities to certain Widows of Supplementary Lieutenants

Admiralty Order in Council No. 52

7 March 1899.

G.

Whereas by Your Majesty's Order in Council of the Twenty-ninth Day of June 1895, regulating the employment of Officers of the Mercantile Marine on a Supplementary List of Your Majesty's Navy, as Lieutenants and Sub-Lieutenants, it was provided that Pensions for Hurts and Wounds, Widows' Pensions, and Compassionate Allowances to children should be awarded at the same rate and under the same conditions as in the case of Officers of the Royal Navy of corresponding rank :

And whereas we are of opinion that the Widows of Officers on the Supplementary List of Your Majesty's Navy not having been killed in action or lost their lives in the execution of the Service, who at the time of their death had not five complete years' seniority as Commissioned Officers on the Active List, should be eligible for the award of Gratuities, provided that such Gratuity shall in every case be less than the Gratuity that would have been payable to the Officer himself, under Your Majesty's Order in Council of the Twenty-ninth Day of June 1895 aforesaid, if he had been compelled by his illness to retire from Your Majesty's Navy instead of dying in it.

We therefore beg leave to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to sanction this proposal, and that this Regulation shall apply to any cases which have occurred prior to the date of this Order.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence therein.
