Allowance of £125 a Year in lieu of Servants extended to certain additional appointments

Admiralty Order in Council No. 55.

A.G.

19th May 1899.

Whereas by Your Majesty's Orders in Council of 5th February 1870, 17th March 1888, and 2nd February 1899, an allowance of £125 a year in lieu of servants is granted to the Captains Superintendent of Pembroke and Sheerness Dock Yards, and to the Captains of the Dock Yard and Fleet Reserves at Portsmouth, Devonport, and Chatham :

And whereas we are of opinion that it would be of advantage that the award of the allowance should be extended so as to apply to certain other Officers holding appointments which do not involve service at sea:

We beg leave humbly to recommend that Your Majesty will be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to sanction payment of the aforesaid allowance of £125 a year in the following appointments : -

    Ships in which borne
Sheerness Flag Captain "Wildfire."
Chatham Captain of Depot "Pembroke" In lieu of the allowance of £100 a year sanctioned by Order in Council 17 March 1888.
Portsmouth Flag Captain "Victory"
Captain of Gunnery Ship, "Excellent"
Captain of Torpedo School Ship. "Vernon"

Devonport

Flag Captain "Vivid."
Inspecting Captain of Boys' Training Ships.

"Impregnable."

Captain of Gunnery Ship, "Cambridge."
Captain of Torpedo School Ship. "Defiance."

The officers now serving (whether in occupation of official residences or not) to have the option of receiving the allowance or of retaining their servants during their tenure of the appointment, but the allowance hereby established is in no case to be paid before 1st April 1899, or until the discharge of the servants at present borne.

In the future the officers concerned may have servants, if they elect upon appointment, to live on board their ships, but if they do not so elect they are to receive the allowance in lieu. This provision is not to apply to the Captains of Your Majesty's Ships " Wildfire " and " Vivid," who occupy official residences, nor to any other of these Captains who may hereafter be similarly accommodated ; in all such cases, the allowance to be paid.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in these proposals.

N.P. 1319 / 1899.
