Improvement of the Pay and Prospects of the Sick Berth Staff in H.M. Fleet - To come into force on 1st April 1900

Whereas we have had under our consideration the difficulty of obtaining suitable recruits for the Sick Berth Staff of Your Majesty's Fleet, and whereas we are of opinion that it is desirable to improve the pay and prospects of such Staff:

We humbly beg leave to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by your Order in Council to sanction the following proposals, to come into force on the First day of April 1900 ;

(I.) The substitution, for the present scale of pay, which was established by Your Majesty's Order in Council of the 17th day of October 1884, of the following : -

Probationary Sick Berth Attendant (under training) 1 4
Sick Berth Attendant under 3 years service as such 1 8
Sick Berth Attendant after 3 years service as such 2 0
Second Sick Berth Steward under 3 years service as such 2 3
Second Sick Berth Steward after 3 years service as such 2 6
Sick Berth Steward under 3 years service as such 2 10
Sick Berth Steward after 3 years service as such 3 2
Sick Berth Steward after 6 years service as such 3 6
Sick Berth Steward after 9 years service as such 3 10
Chief Sick Berth Steward under 2 years service as such 4 2
Chief Sick Berth Steward after 2 years service as such 4 6
When acting as Wardmasters in Royal Naval Hospitals to be paid Store Allowance at 0 6

(II.) The extension of the rating of Chief Sick Berth Steward to Sea-going Flag Ships and Home Depot Ships.

(III.) The establishment of three positions of Warrant rank for the Sick Berth Staff, namely, one at each of the hospitals at Haslar, Plymouth and Chatham, with the title of Head Wardmaster, and the following scale of pay : -

After Fifteen years 9 0

on the understanding that these rates of pay will be strictly inclusive ; the Officers, however, being granted the usual allowance of �25 towards outfit on promotion ; also that the age for compulsory retirement and the scale of pension, widows' pensions, and compassionate allowances to children, will be on the same footing as in the case of Gunners, Boatswains, and Carpenters.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in these proposals.
