Naval Writers - Alteration in the Scale of Pay of, &c.


Admiralty Order in Council No. 105

15 May 1900.

Whereas under Your Majesty's Orders in Council of 2nd February 1867, 5th February 1873, and 8th February 189G, the classification and pay of Naval Writers are as follows : -

Rating. Age and Service required to qualify for Promotion. Status. Daily Rate of Pay.

Boy Writer Prior to 18   1
Third Writer 18 to 23 - 5 years   2
Second Writer 23 to 28 - 5 years Second Class Petty Officer. 3
Chief Writer 28 to 40 - 12 years Chief Petty Officer 5
Chief Writer on re-engaging after completing time for pension. 40 to 50 Do. 6

And whereas we are of opinion that it is desirable to introduce a more graduated system of classification by establishing a Writer rating with the status of a Petty Officer, First Class, and also to slightly increase the pay of the Writer class for the purpose of attracting a suitable class of entrants and of adequately remunerating the Senior Writers for the important duties entrusted to them :

We beg leave humbly to recommend that Your Majesty will be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to cancel the aforesaid Orders in Council of 2nd February 1867 (so far as relates to the pay of Naval Writers), 5th February 1873, and 8th February 1896, and to substitute from 1st April 1900 the following classification and scale of pay, which shall apply to those now serving as well as to new entrants : -

Chief, First, Second, and Third Writers to be eligible for Honorary Good Conduct Badges under the usual conditions.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in these proposals.
