Continuance of Flag Allowances to Engineer Officer of Flagship when an Inspector of Machinery is borne in Squadron but not on Flag ship

Admiralty Order in Council No. 185.

10 December 1901.

N.

Whereas it is considered necessary to appoint Inspectors of Machinery for the general supervision of the machinery of the ships comprising the more important Squadrons of Your Majesty's Fleet.

And whereas by existing regulations such appointments necessitate the discontinuance of the Flag allowances granted to the Fleet Engineers of the Flagships of those Squadrons, although the supervising and advisory duties for which these allowances are paid must still to a considerable extent continue to be performed, as it has been found impracticable to find accommodation for the Inspectors of Machinery on board the flagships.

We therefore beg leave to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased, by Your Order in Council, to sanction the continuance of the allowances to the Engineer Officers of Flagships as follows : -

To the Chief, Staff, or Fleet Engineer, at the Discretion of the Admiralty,

of Flagships of Commanders-in-Chief of other ships bearing Flags or Broad Pendants : -
2s. 0d., a day, if an Inspector of Machinery is attached for the service of the Fleet, and is not accommodated on board the Flagship. If the Inspector of Machinery is absent from the Fleet 30 days, or if none is borne then 5s. a day. If the Inspector of Machinery is accommodated on board the Flagship no allowance will be paid. 2s. 6d. under all circumstances, except when an Inspector of Machinery is accommodated on board,

We further beg leave to recommend that this regulation should take effect from 1st January 1901.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in this proposal.

N. 18109 / 1901.
