Division of Officers in the Navy into Four Branches, viz., Military, Engineers, Medical, and Civil

Admiralty Order in Council No. 194.

24 March 1902.

Whereas by Article one hundred and twenty-nine of the Regulations for the government of Your Majesty's Naval Service, established under Orders in Council of Her late Majesty, and by Your Majesty's Orders in Council of the ninth day of February and the thirteenth day of May 1901, it is laid down that the Officers of Your Majesty's Navy are divided into two branches, namely a Military Branch and a Civil Branch, and by Article one hundred and thirty-nine of the aforesaid Regulations the Officers of the Civil Branch are enumerated and the order in which they shall rank among themselves and with Officers of the Military Branch is regulated ;

And whereas we are of opinion that it is, in the interests of Your Majesty's Naval Service, desirable that the Officers of Your Majesty's Navy shall in future be divided into the following Branches, namely : -

Military,
Engineer,
Medical, and
Civil,

the Officers of these branches to rank as provided for by Articles one hundred and thirty-eight and one hundred and thirty-nine of the aforesaid Regulations, Chaplains as at present not to hold any Naval rank, but to retain when afloat the position to which their Office would entitle them on shore.

We would humbly submit that Your Majesty will be graciously pleased to approve by Your Order in Council that the Officers of Your Majesty's Navy shall be classified accordingly.
