Employment of Intelligence Officers and Assistant Intelligence Officers.

Admiralty Orders in Council No. 1

16 February 1903.

N.

Whereas by an Order in Council of Her late Majesty bearing date the 8th March. 1895 and by Your Majesty's Orders in Council of the 10th December 1901 and the 24th April 1902, provision was made for the grant of an allowance of 6s. a day each to the Officers of Your Majesty's Royal Marines selected for the duty of collecting intelligence relating to Foreign Fleets, &c. on the Mediterranean and China Stations.

And whereas the employment of officers for special service in the acquisition of such intelligence is of growing importance and circumstances may at any time render it desirable that Intelligence Officers should be employed in connection with other Squadrons than those on the Mediterranean and China Stations.

And whereas the increase in the duties of the Intelligence Officer attached to the Mediterranean Squadron renders it necessary to appoint two Assistant Intelligence Officers for service on the Station, and the requirements of Your Majesty's Fleet may render it necessary from time to time to appoint Assistant Intelligence Officers for service with Squadrons on other Stations abroad.

We therefore beg leave to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to empower us as from the 3rd December 1902 to employ in connection with. Your Majesty's Fleet on any Station abroad, an officer of the Royal Navy or Royal Marines as Intelligence Officer and one or more officers as Assistant Intelligence Officers with allowances of 6s, and 3s. a day respectively, if the exigencies of Your Majesty's Service should render the appointment of such officers expedient.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in this proposal.
