Admiralty Order in Council No. 40.

V.

Whereas the Crews of Your Majesty's Ships are at present victualled according to the Scale of Dietary laid down in Appendix XXI. of the Regulations for the Government of Your Majesty's Naval Service ;

And whereas we are of opinion that the general rise in the standard of living which has taken place throughout the country, extending to the classes from which Your Majesty's Navy is recruited, renders it desirable to revise this Scale of Dietary, and to induce a greater variety of food ;

We beg leave humbly to submit a revised Scale of Victualling, and to recommend that Your Majesty may be graciously pleased by Your Order in Council to sanction its introduction into Your Majesty's Naval Service on and from the 1st October 1903, in lieu of the Scale now in force.

Whereas, also, it is the general practice for Boys in Your Majesty's Ships not to contribute towards the expenses of the Mess of which they are members, and this fact constitutes a hardship to the Men ;

We would further beg leave to recommend that in those Messes where the proportion of Boys is more than one Boy to six Men, an allowance of 1d. a day for each Boy beyond that proportion be paid to the Mess.

The Lords Commissioners of Your Majesty's Treasury have signified their concurrence in these proposals.
