The 'D' Day Dodgers

(to the tune of Lily Marlene)

We are the 'D' Day Dodgers [out] in Italy
Always on the vino, always on the spree,
8th Army Skivers and the Yanks
We live in Rome and dodge the tanks
For we're the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.

We landed at Salerno, holiday with pay
Tedeschi brought a band out to cheer us on our way
Showed us the sights and gave us tea
We all sang songs and the beer was free
For we're the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.

Naples and Cassino were taken in our stride,
We didn't go to fight there, just wont for a ride,
Anzio and Angro were O.K. and to us it was just a holiday
For we're the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.

Once we had a blue light we were going home
Back to dear Old Blighty, never more to roam.
Then someone whispered in France you will fight,
We said alright, we'll just sit tight
For we're the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.

On the way to Florence we had a lovely time
They ran a bus to Rimini through the Gothic Line
Soon to Bologna we will go
When Jerry's gone beyond the Po
For we're the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.

We hear the boys in France will soon be getting leave
After six months fighting its a shame they're not relieved
But we can carry on out here
What does it matter for three or fours years
For we're the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.

Oh Lady Astor, we know what you've got
Don't stand on the platform and talk a lot of rot.
You're such a sweetheart, the nations pride
But to us your mouth's far too wide
For we're the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.

If you look around the mountains in the mud and rain
You'll find the scattered crosses, some which bear no name
Heartbreak, toil and suffering gone
The boys beneath them slumber on
They're some of the 'D' Day Dodgers out in Italy.
