The Port Sanitary Authority joint board, which was brought, into existence in 1877, was permanently constituted by the " Weymouth Port Order 1897, " under the title " The Weymouth Port Sanitary Authority."

It consists of 14 members, 7 representing Weymouth Borough, 4 the Portland Urban District, 1 the Wareham and Purbeck Rural District, and 2 the Weymouth Rural District.

The order came into operation in October, 1897. The members of the Board are elected in November of each year, commencing office on Dec. 1.

The jurisdiction of the authority extends to that part of the Port of Weymouth which is comprised within the following boundaries :-

A line drawn due south from the seaward extremity of the common boundaries of the parishes of Puncknowle and Abbotsbury to the nearest point of the seaward boundary of the customs Port of Weymouth, a line drawn from such last mentioned point out and thereafter following the seaward boundary of the customs port of Weymouth to the point at which the said boundary is intersected by a line co-incident with the common boundary of the customs Ports of Weymouth and Poole, and a line drawn from such last mentioned point and thereafter following the common boundary of the customs Ports of Weymouth and Poole, to its termination of S. Alban's Head in the parish of Worth Matravers, together with the waters of the said Port of Weymouth within such limits, and all docks, basins, harbours, creeks, rivers, &c., &c. *

The Port Sanitary Hospital was erected in 1880 at a cost of between �5,000 and �6,000. It contains 4 wards. *

The Hospital, which was situated at Ferry Bridge, ** Smallmouth, became disused in the 1930s and was converted to a holiday camp by the Methodist Holiday Fellowship, and has subsequently passed through many hands, but is still a holiday camp, only the accommodation now appears to consist of mobile homes.**
