Guardians - Elections - Portland
The last contested election of Guardians was in 1894 when there were five candidates for the two seats in the Underhill District The polling was as follows :

There was a tie between the second and third names on the list necessitating a fresh election when Mr .J. J. Patten was returned by substantial majority and Mr Comben and Mr Patten have been returned unopposed ever since. In the Tophill Division Mr Jonathan Lano and Mr Wm. Coombe were elected in 1894 and have been returned unopposed at each subsequent election.
