Stoppage of Allotments to Wives and Relatives of Seamen etc.

Admiralty 19th June 1860

Complaints having lately come under the notice of my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, of the distress caused to the relatives of seamen by the stoppage of their allotments for alleged insufficient reasons, my Lords direct, that before Captains and Commanding Officers of Her Majesty's Ships request the Accountant General of the Navy to stop allotments to wives or near relatives, they shall personally make enquiry as to the validity of the reasons given by the man for discontinuing payment, and, where necessary, reason with them as to the propriety of continuing to support their wives and families.
