Sea Service Rifles, Bayonets and Cutlasses to be Numbered.

Circular No. 430.

Admiralty, 20th June, 1860.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty have deemed it expedient that the new pattern Rifles issued for Sea Service should be numbered in the same way as those issued to the Army, the Commanding Officers of Her Majesty's Ships are hereby informed that consecutive numbers, from one upwards, will be engraved on the heel-plate of the Rifle previous to issue by the Military Storekeeper at the port of fitting out. Should any Arms be required to replace a portion of those first issued, a statement of the deficient numbers is to be sent to the Military Storekeeper at the port where the Ship may be, and those numbers will then be engraved on the arms to be issued.

The same rule is to be observed in the case of Cutlasses and Bayonets, the latter of which will bear the number of the Rifles to which they belong.

In no case are the numbers to be engraved on board Ship.

By Command of their Lordships,
C. Paget,
To all Flag Officers &c.
