Care of Rudder Heads

Circular No. 417,

Admiralty, 2nd April, 1860,

Instances having occurred on board of Her Majesty's Ship of a large number of men being put to the steering wheel, as well as to the relieving tackles and spare wheel, for the purpose of putting the helm hard over, when steaming at full power ; and it being impracticable to make Rudder Heads of sufficient strength to bear with safety the strain thus brought upon them, it is their Lordships' directions that great care be taken not to bring an excessive twisting force upon the Rudder Heads, excepting in cases where the exigencies of the moment may justify the risk.

By Command of their Lordships,
C. Paget
To all Commanders-in-Chief, &c.
