Preparing to Enter Harbour

HMS ALBION - 1958-60 - Entering Harbour

HMS ALBION, a Centaur Class light fleet carrier, was built by Swan Hunter on the Tyne: launched 6 May 1947, but not completed until 1954.

In October 1956 HMS ALBION formed a part of the task force engaged in the Suez campaign: she subsequently travelled around the World, and spent much of 1960 in the Far East: she returned to the UK in early 1961 in order to follow HMS BULWARK in being converted to a Commando Carrier at Portsmouth.

She then saw service during the Malay/Indonesian border disputes in 1963 and in 1967 was involved in the withdrawal from Aden. She was laid-up in 1972 and was towed to Faslane for the ship breakers in 1973 after plans to use her in the North Sea oil fields were abandoned.
