The Fifth HMS MOHAWK was Twin Screw Cruiser, 3rd Class, displacing 1770 Tons, capable of 16 knots with a complement of 172: she was armed with 6 x 6 inch guns; 8 x 3 pdrs; and three torpedo tubes. In 1890 she was based at Sheerness, having just been built, but in later years was to serve time on the South Atlantic, Australian, Mediterranean, China, and East Indies Stations.
Orders have been received at Sheerness Dockyard directing alterations to be made in the third-class cruisers Tartar and Mohawk, 6, 1,770 tons, 3,500 horse power, for the improvement of the arrangements for ventilating their magazines. The Tartar and Mohawk are sister ships, and have been unemployed since their completion in 1887, except during the annual naval manoeuvres. The Tartar, however, is expected to be commissioned s few months hence for the relief o the third-class cruiser Archer, 6, 1,770 toes, 5,00-horse power, Commander John Ferris, which will shortly complete her term of service on the Cape o Good Hope and West Coast of Africa Station.
