Diary of Midshipman N K Calder
Introduction 1918 |
This is a transcription of the 1918 Diary of N K CALDER.
The pages of the diary are 9 cm x 14.5 cm and are printed with the year (1918) the month and the day and date. It is a Walkers Diary and probably one of those mentioned in December 1917. The binding is in bad repair and several of the "memoranda" pages are missing. They appear to have been used to record letters received and written.
At the end of the diary are a number of "Memoranda" pages. These contain the main details of the major ships of the "Grand Fleet at Beginning of 1918" and a list of siblings birthdays.

On each page, above the Year -Day/Date -Month panel NKC has written the place where he was at the time. Occasionally an extra note is made.
I have transcribed each day with the heading -"Day -Date -Note" with the Month added above the first day only of each month.
NKC has consistently used the spelling "alright" for "all right", he often writes the word Bank with a capital letter, so these have been retained through the document. In most other cases common spelling mistakes have been corrected. Initials, eg. C E R for Control Engine Room, are sometimes C.E.R or CER. For the sake of consistency, I have chosen to close all initials together without full stops; eg. CER, BS, YMCA, RN, RAN etc.
He is also inconsistent with rank abbreviations and generally does not use capitals for the first letter eg. "lieut-com". I have not changed these.
