402 persons were listed as being either Passengers or Crew onboard the East Indiaman, Earl of Abergavenny on the night of 5 February 1805, when she grounded on the Shambles and subsequently sank before she was able to make shore.

The Court of Directors, ever anxious to alleviate the pressure of misfortune "Resolved unanimously 'that in consideration of the severe loss in baggage and passage money, experienced by the undermentioned Cadets of India, saved from the wreck of the Earl of Abergavenny - viz
