The suggested date for this photograph is the late 1890s, with HMS Marlborough and HMS Duke of Wellington as a background, at Portsmouth Dockyard.

HMS Marlborough, disp. 6,300 tons, launched Portsmouth 31 Jul. 1855 (In 1846 work on the vessel was stopped). In 1860, was Flag Ship, Mediterranean ; in 1878, was converted for use as a training ship for Engineer Students at Portsmouth. In 1890, attached to HMS Asia as Receiving Hulk for Steamship Reserve ; after personnel moved into RN Barracks Portsmouth in 1903, the Marlborough was re-named Vernon II and became a part of the Vernon training establishment until suitable premises were built at the gun wharf in 1923 ; in 1924 she was sold, but capsized whilst under tow to the breakers.

HMS Duke of Wellington, 6,071 tons disp. ; launched at Pembroke Dock as Windsor Castle 14 Sep 1852 ; laid down as a sailing ship ; converted to screw on the stocks ; renamed HMS Duke of Wellington Oct 1852 ; 1855 present at Bombardment of Sveaborg ; 1860 Guard Ship of Sailing Ordinary, Devonport ; 1863 Converted for use in Harbour Service ; Flag Ship, Portsmouth ; after personnel moved into RN Barracks Portsmouth in 1903, the Duke of Wellington was sold in 1904.
