Content
The contents of the censuses differ depending on the year
taken. Overall, the records provide the name of each
resident and an indication of whether the individual was
married or widowed; the number of children living in his or
her household separated into the following cartegories: boys
over 15 years of age, boys under 15 years of age and girls
regardless of age. (The division of boys into two categories
was related to potential military service; boys over fifteen
were considered capable of bearing arms.) The censuses also
tell us about the number of servants or domestics, engagés
(indentured employees), sailors and fishermen included in
each household, as well as the quantity of their boats and
whether those boats were engaged in the fishery or in other
forms of commerce.
Although not part of the original censuses, I offer an
additional column of information to assist researchers in
correctly identifying individuals included in these
censuses. This additional column gives you (1) the name of
the resident’s wife and (2) the page reference to each
families information as contained in the Dictionnaire
généalogique des familles acadiennes.
Column Keys
The following glossary is an interpretive key to the various
census columns. Stephen White provides us with an English
translation of the column headings as they appeared on the
original census documents. All of these entries will not
appear on every census. Terms will differ depending on the
year the census was taken. Steve’s work is offered to ensure
you receive an accurate summary of the information in each
entry.

Number/No:
An arbitrary number assigned to each person included in the
census. The original census records did not include numbers
preceding residents. These were included on the
transcription to make it easier to differentiate between
individuals. Residents are listed in the exact order they
appear in the original censuses.
Resident: The name of the resident transcribed
exactly as it appears in the original census, with only one
change: all proper names have been capitalized
Occupation: The English translation of the
individual's occupation
Spouse: The name of the resident's spouse entered as
it appears in the Dictionnaire généalogique des familles
acadiennes.
From: The resident's place of origin. Occasionaly
this is merely a place of former residence. Where cities in
France are indicated, they are often the dioceses of origin
and not specific birthplaces.
Boys: The number of boys residing with the resident.
Boys Over 15: The number of boys over the age of 15
residing with the resident.
Boys Under 15: The number of boys under the age of 15
residing with the resident.
Girls: The number of girls of any age residing with
the resident.
Children: Total number of children living in the
resident's household.
Persons: Total number of persons living in the
resident's household.
Domestics and/or Servants: Household servants living
with the resident.
Engagees: Indentured employees living with the
resident.
Men: Men, hired from France for three-year periods,
contracted to do fishing.
Sailors, Fishermen and Shore Workers: Persons living
with the resident engaged in the fishery.
Shallops: A small fishing boat owned by one or more
members of this family.
Boats & Schooners: Larger vessels, owned by the
resident or member of this family, which were involved in
the fishery or in commerce, such as coasting and trading.
DGFA: This column provides page references to the
Dictionnaire génealogique des familles acadiennes, Part 1.
It makes appropriate corrections to the information included
the Resident column, including spelling, accents, etc. These
pages will be appropriately updated when Dictionnaire
généalogique des familles acadiennes, Part 2 is published.
