(John may have died in the massacre on 3 Oct 1631. However, there is no proof that Thomas & John and their mother were with their father when his cabin was burned by the Indians. There is a John Peverly listed in the "NEW HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS - 1633-1699" as a First Settler of New Hampshire in 1640. This John could have been this one. There is no proof to support this possibilty. His brother Thomas Peverel/Peverly had a son named John but most likely not born until 1649, so could not be the one mentioned in the Resident list above.) |
John Peverel-Peverly's father may have been William Peverel of Dorsetshire. England. Jane Peverel, William's daughter may be his sister. It is not known at this time if there are any other children. John Peverel-Peverly is thought to be a direct descendant of William the Conqueror and Maud Ingelrica. (See: Peverel of Royal Descent on The Conqueror & Ingelrica) John Peverly is shown on several passenger lists throughout the 1620's into 1630 and 1631 as a passenger aboard ships coming into New England. He is listed as a planter and trader. He may have come as early as 1621 on the ship Fortune as has been passed down by Family Tradition. We have a story on John Peverel-Peverly in our Picture book. It also contains the Massacre and Robbery. John was a partner of Walter Bagnall. Bagnall had mistreated & robbed the Indians in his dealings with them. Squidrayset, a Sagamore Indian, and his company are said to have killed the two, robbed them and burned down their cabin on Richmond Island. |
