He then joined the Border Patrol as Assistant Chief Scout in the Brownsville to Roma district. Beginning in 1938 he became a Texas Ranger for three years. Thus he spent 47 years in the field of law enforcement.

John became an appraiser of real estate and cattle with the First National Bank in McAllen. He retired after working there for 19 years.

He is the author of a book, Echoes from the Rio Grande. This book is written in detail of his activities in law enforcement along the border.
